Today Armenia’s Foreign Minister Vartan Oskanian met representatives of Brussels-based think tanks and international organisations to discuss Armenia’s deepening relationship with the European Union and its foreign policy in general.
Held in the wake of the international conference on the European
Neighbourhood Policy that took place on September 3, this round table
dealt with Armenia’s expectations from the European Union and its goal
of “European integration”.
This was an opportunity for the Minister in particular to articulate the principles of Armenia’s policy of “Complementarity”, which consists in ensuring good relations with all of the region’s major players, and showing consideration for their interests. Armenia has strived, successfully, to maintain good relations at once with Russia, the USA, the EU, Georgia and Iran. Discussions were also held on the matter of Armenia’s relations with two of its neighbours, Turkey and Azerbaijan.
On Nagorno-Karabakh, Oskanian and the participants discussed the current work of the Minsk Group and the EU’s contribution to conflict resolution in this context.
Armenia’s Foreign Minister will soon complete his tenth consecutive year in office. Born in Syria, he studied and worked in Armenia and in the USA before becoming a diplomat, then Minister, in Armenia.
The rountable, which was attended by 25 experts on the region, was hosted jointly by the Heinrich Boell Foundation and the Inside Europe resource centre.
