About Turkey and Armenians
Turkey has considerable importance for Armenians generally- whether they are citizens of neighbouring Armenia, citizens of the EU of Armenian origin or indeed citizens of the Turkish Republic.
Concerns
Turkey has considerable importance for Armenians generally- whether they are citizens of neighbouring Armenia, citizens of the EU of Armenian origin or indeed citizens of the Turkish Republic.
Turkey's state-driven nationalism has traditionally portrayed Armenians as the enemy. This has led the authorities and much of the population in Turkey to support policies hostile to Armenians.
>> Inside the country, Armenians suffer discrimination and continue to be under special surveillance, in spite of their small number- 60 000 individuals in a country of 65 million.
>> Turkey has blockaded, and refuses to establish diplomatic relations with neighbouring Armenia since 1993.
>> Turkey also conducts overt hate campaigns against Armenians in Europe, some of which involved the use of the international media, of Turkish language media in Europe, and of locally elected Turkish politicians.
Focus
There are numerous Internet resources on Turkey-Armenia relations,
particularly on the Armenian genocide and genocide denial. Berlin-based
AGA (for Working Group on Recognition) provides much in the way of
resources in German, French and Armenian.
