Racism and xenophobia invited to the European Parliament

Dr. Justin McCarthy has been invited to give a lecture on Wednesday 15th June at the European Parliament in Brussels. The event, undertaken by the British MEP Richard Howitt (Labour) is the latest episode Turkey's ongoing campaign of Genocide denial in Europe.

EAFJD, Press release, 15/6/2005

McCarthy, a so-called historian, is one of the most notorious and ardent deniers of the Armenian Genocide. Just as Faurisson and Irving have taken the lead in Jewish Holocaust denial, so has McCarthy masterminded the policies of "scholarly" deceit regarding the Armenian Genocide.

Mr. McCarthy's flawed statistical "analysis" regarding the Armenian population in the region is a prime example of so called scholarly denial tactics. His studies have been designed to undercount the Armenian population in Turkey prior to the Genocide and have been proven to be faulty by a leading specialist in the field.

The European Parliament recognized the Armenian Genocide in 1987 and has reaffirmed its acknowledgement annually through political dialogue between the European Union (EU) and the Republic of Turkey. As a result, extending an invitation to Mr. McCarthy to speak in Brussels is unwarranted, because his distorted views are out of sync with mainstream opinion regarding the Armenian Genocide and therefore should not be introduced into the political dialogue.

Furthermore, Mr. McCarthy advocates a position, which distorts the reality of the genocide. This invitation compromises the integrity of the European Parliament. This very severe breach to the dignity of millions of Europeans would be a blatant rejection of the core values of the European Union and would distance European citizens from the European Project.

As such, we solemnly call upon the President of the European Parliament to immediately cancel this conference. We also urge the President of the Socialist group in the European Parliament to take appropriate action.
